A Non-Competitive Choir Festival: Music Without Rankings
Most choral festivals ask a choir to compete. Choral Fest Costa Rica for Peace asks something different: to connect. There are no juries scoring your performance against another ensemble, no medals, no rankings, no elimination rounds. From June 23–27, 2027, choirs from around the world will gather in San José, Costa Rica, not to be judged, but to sing alongside one another — in shared concerts, workshops, and community encounters built around a single idea: that music is stronger when it brings people together instead of ranking them.
What “Non-Competitive” Actually Means Here
A non-competitive choir festival isn’t the absence of standards — it’s a different measure of success. Instead of asking “who sang best?”, the festival asks “what did we build together?” Every participating choir performs, receives feedback and recognition for their artistry, and takes part in joint concerts with other ensembles, but no choir is placed above another. There are no trophies to win or lose.
For many directors, this is the appeal. Competitive festivals can push singers toward tension, comparison, and a narrow definition of achievement. A non-competitive format frees a choir to take interpretive risks, program meaningful repertoire, and focus entirely on the experience of singing rather than the anxiety of being scored. It also removes an awkward dynamic for touring choirs: instead of treating other ensembles as rivals, singers meet them as colleagues and, often, as friends.
Why Directors Are Choosing Encounter Over Competition
Choir directors bringing their ensembles to Costa Rica describe the same shift: singers arrive focused on winning and leave focused on what they experienced. The festival is structured around joint rehearsals, shared repertoire (“Common Songs”) sung by all participating choirs together, and cultural workshops — moments where competition simply has no place, because everyone is on stage, in the same piece, at the same time.

Across the festival week, choirs take part in:
- Joint concerts where multiple choirs share the same program and, in several pieces, the same stage.
- Workshops led by guest conductors, focused on vocal technique, interpretation, and cross-cultural repertoire.
- Community performances in schools, churches, and public plazas around Costa Rica — sharing music with audiences who may never have heard an international touring choir live.
- Cultural exchange activities that let singers experience Costa Rica outside the concert hall, from nature to local traditions.
