3 Things You Need to Know About Costa Rica

Hello everyone! My name is Sebastián, and this is Suzanne. Today, we are going to tell you three things you need to know about Costa Rica. First, let’s talk a bit about the location of the country.

Where is Costa Rica?

So, where is Costa Rica? First, let’s go to the map to find America. You will find North America, South America, and right there in the middle, Central America. Yes! We are a whole continent divided into three Americas. Costa Rica is located between Nicaragua and Panama, and the capital of Costa Rica is called San José.

1. Electricity

One interesting fact about Costa Rica is the arrival of electric lights. In 1884, San José became the third city in the world to be illuminated by electric street lights, just two years after New York. Nowadays, most of the electricity in Costa Rica is produced with renewable energy sources.

2. No Army

The second thing you need to know about Costa Rica happened just right here, but we are going to the beach with Suzanne, and she will tell us more about it.

We don’t have an army since 1948, and that’s because our president at that time, Pepe Figueres, decided to abolish the army after a civil war where we lost a lot of soldiers. He chose to use that money for our education and in our country, so we are considered a country of peace.

3. Coat of Arms

In the coat of arms, you will see three volcanoes, each representing the mountain ranges of the country. You will also find an extensive valley between two oceans, one representing the Pacific Ocean, and the other is the Caribbean Sea. In each of the oceans, you will see a merchant ship, representing the maritime history of the country, and at the horizon, a rising sun.

Everything is surrounded by a golden frame with golden beans that represent coffee. Two palms are joined with a white ribbon with the motto “República de Costa Rica” – Republic of Costa Rica. An arch of seven stars represents the seven provinces of the country, and the arms are crowned with a blue ribbon with the motto “América Central” – Central America.

For those who are celebrating it today, Merry Christmas, guys, and thanks for watching What’s Going On?
